Before I start any SEO project, I ensure that Google Search Console formerly Google Webmaster Tools is setup. This helps me to get a benchmark of what keywords the website I am working on is ranking for, whether it’s mine or my client’s website. It also helps me to check the health of the website. Are there any broken links? Is the site verified by Google? Are Google able to crawl all pages? These are some questions that Google Search Console help answer. Bing also has a Webmaster Tool, that allows you to monitor your site on Bing. It’s important to note that Bing also powers the natural results of Yahoo.
Google Analytics and Google Search Console should be used together. If Google Analytics is your analytics tracking tool of choice, connecting it to Google Search Console will help you uncover what keywords, known as queries, are driving traffic to your website. Further more, knowing your SEO efforts are producing solid results is important, you can discover how much traffic your website is getting and how well your website is converting those visitors into leads and sales.
Keyword research is the foundation of SEO, without it you will be virtually guessing. According to research 40% of all searches online are NEW. Without doing keyword research you cannot determine what they best keywords to target are, or whether those keywords have enough search volume to drive traffic to your website.
On Page Optimization
Once you have done your competitive analysis and made your final keyword selection, the next step is optimizing your website for the keywords that you would like to target. Focusing on one keyword per page, with the exception of your homepage. I recommend targeting up to 3 keywords on your homepage. It’s the page most people link to and it most likely has the most authority. On page optimization requires you to place your keyword in key areas on your website that search engines typically crawl to index your website to determine relevance to search queries.
